The first fort in Ganghwa with the spirit of the patriots to protect their sea and territory

Deokjinjin Fort was the first fort to defend the Straits of Korea with Dekpojin Fort in the Goryeo Dynasty. After the Manchu war, the royal family built 12 forts including Deokjinjin Fort, Naeseong Fort, Oeseong Fort, Dondae Fort and Jinbo Fort to protect Ganghwado Island. Deokjinjin Fort with Yongdudondae Fort and Deokjindondae Fort was the most important strategic point among 12 forts to have control of Deokjinpodae and Namjangpodae. In the French campaign against Korea, Yang Heonsu’s army defeated the French army at Jeongjoksanseong Fortress through Deokjinjin Fort, and it was a fierce battlefield for U.S. fleets during the United States expedition to Korea.

德津镇与德浦镇一起，是高丽时代守护江华海峡的江华岛第1炮台。丙子胡乱之后，王室为了保护江华岛，建筑了内城·外城·墩台·镇堡等12镇堡，其中之一就是德津镇。德津镇率领龙头墩台与德津墩台，是掌管德津炮台与南障炮台等江华12镇堡中最重要的要地。丙寅洋扰当时，梁宪洙率领的军队经过德津镇，进入鼎足山城，击溃法国军队，辛未洋扰当时，与美国舰队展开激战的地方。

 
Now, Deokjinjin Fort has Namjangpodae, Deokjindondae and Deokjinjin Fort's Gyeongobi Monument. Namjangpodae is unique in its half-moon shape that was not easy for the enemy to find, and it had 15 cannons at that time. At the invasion of Korea by the three U.S. warships in 1871, Deokjindondae had fierce firefights for two days. Deokjinjin Fort's Gyeonggobi Monument always stands in solemnity. It was inscribed with “Haebangsutagukseonsinmulgwa”, which means that our troops have defended the gateway of Korea, so foreign flagships cannot go through. The trace of bullets on the right side of the monument shows the spirit of those patriots who gave up their lives for their country.

德津镇遗留着南障炮台、德津墩台、德津镇警告碑等。南障炮台在建立当时，共设置15门大炮，而为了隐藏以半月状筑造的设计非常独特。德津墩台是辛未洋扰时，与美国舰队展开两天期间激烈的炮战的地方。站在德津镇警告碑前，不自觉地产生肃然之情。碑文刻着‘海门防守他国船慎勿过’。这意味着‘守护大海关卡，禁止外国船舶通行’。警告碑右侧遗留的枪弹痕迹，提醒着我们拼死护国的我们的祖先崇高的精神
