Largest castle in Pocheon, the historical fortress that defended Pocheon for years

Banwolseongji Site is 2853.5 above sea level. It was constructed around the summit of Chungseungsan Mountain, alias Banwolsan Mountain. Its circumference is 1,080m, making it the biggest castle in Pocheon. From ancient time to the Joseon period, the Banwolseong Fortress acted as the main castle of Pocheon. Due to archaeological investigation and excavation, many castle walls and buildings were found. They also found roof tiles with carvings that said “Maholsuhaegonggudan” confirming that Mahol, noted in The Chronicles of the Three States, was Pocheon. Results so far show that the Banwolsanseong Fortress was constructed during the Three Kingdoms period until the Unified Silla period, then it was destroyed during the Goryeo era. It was rebuilt during the Joseon era to protect the country from the Chinese.
